Ben Lomond ski resort overview:
Ben Lomond Ski Resort is Tasmania’s only commercial ski area and offers a unique alpine experience on Australia’s southernmost ski slopes. Located within Ben Lomond National Park, the resort sits on a dramatic plateau at elevations of around 1,450 to 1,570 metres and is approximately a two-hour drive from Launceston. The ski area is much smaller than the major mainland resorts, but it provides a welcoming atmosphere for beginners, families, and local skiers. Terrain is centred around a handful of groomed runs and snow-play areas served by surface lifts, with skiing depending heavily on natural snowfall. When conditions are good, visitors can enjoy scenic alpine runs overlooking the rugged landscapes of Tasmania’s Central Highlands. One of the most memorable parts of a trip to Ben Lomond is the access road, particularly the famous Jacob's Ladder, a series of steep hairpin bends that climbs dramatically onto the plateau. The journey itself is considered an attraction. Accommodation on the mountain is limited, so many visitors stay in nearby towns or in Launceston. Beyond skiing, the area is popular for snow play, sightseeing, hiking, and wildlife watching. Ben Lomond offers a distinctive Tasmanian alpine experience that feels remote, relaxed, and very different from the larger resorts of the Australian Alps.
