Big White ski resort overview:
Big White Ski Resort is one of British Columbia’s best-known ski resorts and offers a particularly appealing combination of extensive terrain, reliable snow and a convenient ski-in, ski-out village. Located in the Monashee Mountains, around 56km from Kelowna, the resort reaches a summit of 2,319 metres and has a vertical drop of 777 metres. The skiing is varied enough to suit most abilities. Big White has 119 designated trails covering approximately 105km of marked terrain, with 54% classified as intermediate, 18% beginner, 22% expert and 6% extreme. Beginners have wide, relatively gentle pistes around the village, while intermediate skiers have a particularly large choice of long groomed runs. More experienced skiers can explore alpine bowls, gladed areas and steeper terrain around areas such as the Cliff and Gem Lake. The longest marked descent, Around the World, is approximately 7.2km. The official Big White piste map shows the main village slopes, Black Forest, Gem Lake, alpine terrain and the various lift connections, making it easier to plan routes according to ability. Big White reports average annual snowfall of around 750cm and promotes its light, dry Okanagan snow. The resort also has 1,525 acres of alpine bowls and gladed terrain, providing plenty of opportunities to move beyond the groomed pistes. The village is a significant advantage, particularly for families. Much of the accommodation is genuinely ski-in, ski-out, reducing the need for daily transfers, while restaurants, shops and other facilities are concentrated around the resort centre. There is also extensive night skiing, with Big White describing its 38-acre facility as the largest in Western Canada. The main drawback is accessibility: visitors normally fly to Kelowna International Airport and then travel approximately 56km to the resort. The relatively high village elevation can also mean colder conditions and variable weather. Overall, Big White combines extensive intermediate skiing, substantial advanced terrain, dependable snow, excellent slope-side accommodation and a family-friendly atmosphere. It is a versatile choice for mixed-ability groups seeking a classic Canadian ski holiday.
