Serre Chevalier ski resort overview:
Skiing in Serre Chevalier, a major ski resort in the French Alps near Briançon in the Hautes-Alpes, is a varied and scenic experience suited to many ability levels. The ski area stretches from about 1200m to roughly 2800m in altitude, offering a substantial 1600m of vertical descent and around 250 km of pistes linked by close to 60 lifts. The terrain is diverse: tree-lined blues and reds wind through forests, while higher up broad bowls and steeper pitches provide challenges for more advanced skiers. A mix of green, blue, red, and black runs ensures there’s something for beginners through to experienced skiers, and extensive snowmaking helps maintain good conditions throughout the season. Unlike many purpose-built Alpine resorts, Serre Chevalier includes traditional villages such as Chantemerle, Villeneuve and Monêtier-les-Bains, plus the historic fortified town of Briançon, giving a more authentic French alpine atmosphere. Long sunny days are common in the resort, which reportedly enjoys about 300 days of sunshine a year - a welcome bonus for skiers. After a day on the slopes, many visitors relax in local spas or enjoy regional cuisine, making Serre Chevalier both a rewarding skiing destination and a charming winter holiday location.
