Valloire ski resort overview:
Valloire is a traditional Savoyard village in the Maurienne valley of the French Alps, at about 1,430 metres. Unlike many purpose-built resorts, it has kept the character of a real mountain community, with stone-and-timber chalets, narrow streets and a baroque church at its heart. It remains a working village year-round, which gives it a warm, unhurried atmosphere. The skiing is shared with neighbouring Valmeinier in the Galibier-Thabor area, which offers roughly 150 kilometres of pistes. It suits families, beginners and intermediates especially well, with plenty of gentle, tree-lined runs and wide cruising terrain above the village. Confident skiers can head higher for open slopes and some steeper pistes, and there are good off-piste options when conditions allow. Prices are generally more modest than in the big-name resorts, and the village has a good range of restaurants, bars, ski shops and accommodation, from apartments to hotels and chalets. Evening life is relaxed rather than raucous. Valloire also sits below the Col du Galibier, one of the most famous climbs in the Tour de France, so summer brings cyclists, walkers and mountain bikers. Access is straightforward by road from Chambéry Airport (CMF) or Grenoble, or by train to Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne.
